In this photo, the focus is clearly on the stairs that the characters are surrounding. The light source is coming from the top doorway and nothing else on stage is illuminated as brightly as the stairs are, so it is going to easily draw the attention of the audience.
The selective lighting makes the figure at the top of the stairs appear as if they're descending from heaven. The light also helps in filling the background behind the figure, so that it just behind him is just pure shine. It ironically reminds me of The Exorcist!
ReplyDeleteThe bold yellow color choice is interesting, because it looks quite unnatural and adds to the otherworldly aspect of this photo. The back lighting behind the figure at the top and the fact that the same light highlights the stairs all the way down really makes that figure seem important.
