Esau selling his birthright
from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_and_Esau

The single candle in the middle of the painting draws our focus in as it reveal the details of the two people in the painting. The shadows at the edge of the scene make the world seem forbidding and dangerous.

  1. I like how the painter uses light and shadow in this photo to selectively reveal the action. As a viewer, the little bit of light created by the candle makes me feel like I am being told a secret. I agree that the the shadows create a feeling of danger. However, I think the shadows encroach on the individuals in the image and make it seem like the action could also be dangerous.

  2. The candle in the center beautifully highlights the clothing and faces of the subjects. It gives off a bit of a spooky ambiance that I find intriguing. I think this is best conveyed through the single source of light in a dark room.
