Sunday Morning by Asher Durand

I like the brightness of this 19th century painting. The light source is clearly suppose to be coming from the sun. I think it is fascinating how the artist can use various tones of white in order to mimic natural light. The dark area in front of the trees also create a shadow.

  1. The use of shadows in this painting is amazing. The shade in the front of the trees cast by the hillside really gives us an idea of where the light source is without directly showing it. I also want to note how even in the trees, there is shadow and light differences within it to highlight that the tree branches can cast shadows on themselves.
