Cats gobo lighting

I know the Cats musical is a huge meme but the lighting and scenic design is incredible. I think the gobos here are used to break up the directional lighting rather than projecting an image onto the floor. This lighting design fills the open space with texture, rather than harsh directional lighting. It creates a really interesting and dramatic effect.

  1. The lighting is directed not towards the actor in the air but to the crowd on the stage. I really like this focus and how some actors are in the bright blue light and others are in the near darkness at the extremes of the stage.

  2. The slightly broken up texture and intense focus makes it look like the cats are in moonlight, which sets the scene well. I think it's interesting to see how bright they chose to make this effect of moonlight, which adds to the drama of the scene.
