Moody Lighting - Vertigo

This still is from the film “Vertigo” by Alfred Hitchcock. I feel that the lighting in this scene communicates a heightened and overwhelming mood. The chilling green light comes from a neon sign outside the female protagonist’s window. But at this moment, which is very exaggerated, the low green light adds to this unrealistic atmosphere.

  1. I agree that the lighting creates an overwhelming mood, and I feel that it adds to the scene very well. Especially with the character walking towards the camera and with a strong, powerful shadow cast on the wall, it prepares the audience in a sense for something big that is going to happen. Although I do feel that the color of the light potentially changes the true color of her outfit.
