"Self-Portrait with Disheveled Hair/Self-Portrait as a Young Man" by Rembrandt

I was surprised by Rembrandt's choice of lighting direction. I had never seen a classical portrait depicted in this way, especially a self-portrait, with the features almost completely lost in shadow. I feel this creates a complex read of the painting. It may be read as ominous and foreboding, or maybe as solemn.
