Old Woman with a Candle - Gerrit Dou (1613)
I found this painting interesting because it perfectly captures the usage of small, dim light in a wider, darker area. There is only one light source so the woman is more illuminated than anything else in the picture, and this is seen in the detail in the structure below her which is faintly lit because it is not in direct view of the candle.
