Directional Lighting

This image by a photographer who goes by "brittabug" on social media uses natural backlight. The diffusion of this light suggests a heavy presence of dust, which is also supported by the worn-down condition of the door frame (and possibly dated window style). This diffuse natural light makes the girl appear ghostly (as does her expression). The light is slightly warm, in the same palette as her dress, hair, skin, and the door behind her. This subtle warmth prevents the feeling of a haunted house, which might be the case if the hues in this image were shifted to a saturated blue or red. Instead, it feels ambiguously nostalgic, and surreal.

  1. I find this image slightly eerie, but also still very warm and natural at the same time. While the light shines on the dust around the woman and illuminates the area around her, she is also partially lit in a way that details her mood and her features. The light is warm yet slightly dim, and this allows for things such as her dress, face, and hair to be given contrast to the shadows without being completely washed out be a higher intensity light.
