Mars and Venus Surprise by Vulcan
In this Old Masters Painting, the light is used as a tool of illumination to show the deceitful ways of Venus towards her husband. Symbolic, the light is used as a sign of enlightenment as the gods peer down into the the couple caught by her husband. Light is also at play as Mars has more shadows than Venus as the gods are shining the light on Venus more because she is a married woman who has committed an evil crime and wish to expose her more so than Mars.
