The light in this image is coming through the blinds on the left, which also acts as the only light source in this picture. The entire left side of the image is mirrored on the right side with the dark switching to the light and vice versa. As well, some of the light that does get thought the blinds hits the man's face, though not all of the light, which makes it seem like he is hiding or trying to be partly covered. The black and white also makes leads me to believe its some sort of Noire style.
I love the lighting in this photo and I especially agree with what you said about it making it seem like he is hiding something. The slots of light on his face and more importantly the lines of shadow make the viewer understand that he is hiding something.
